ES-IS is a routing protocol used between end system (ES) and intermediate system (IS = router).
ES-IS is used in two different types:
> ISO 9542 - CLNS ES-IS - Connectionless-Mode ES-IS-Protocol
> ISO 10030 - CONS ES-IS - Connection-Mode ES-IS-Protocol
CONS ES-IS operation is connection-oriented;
CLNS ES-IS operation is connectionless;
CLNS ES-IS uses 4 different PDU types;
CONS ES-IS uses 11 different PDU types.
CLNS ES-IS uses different PDU type with this structure:
1. A fixed part, used by all PDU types;
2. a variable address part (depends on PDU type);
3. an options part (optional; depends on PDU type).
