Because a FDDI station can be attached to one ring with up to three adapters, there may be up to three instances of MIB objects: 1-3 MAC objects, 1-3 path objects, 1-3 port objects. But there can only be one SMT object per station.

The parameter index is used to identify each instance of an object. Index value zero is used to query the object instance of all MACs (all adapters); index values 1, 2, 3 are used to query the corresponding object of only one MAC.
