Type / length field

Ethernet II uses protocol type IDs (EtherType IDs) to identify the upper layer protocol; IEEE uses LLC SAPs (and SNAP type Ids) combined with a data length indicator. The ability to understand both 'idioms' has to be provided by the adapter's driver.
