PMF - Parameter Management Frames

The PMF protocol is optional; it may (or may not) be implemented. If an adapter that does not support parameter management frames receives a PMF, it will respond by sending a RDF.

RDF - Request Denied Frames

PMF supply FDDI node management. PMF are used to query (PMF Get) or set (PMF Set) FDDI MIB parameter values.

PMF Get

PMF queries are performed this way:

1. A PMF Get request is sent to the queried station.

2. The queried station answeres with a PMF Get response.

Parameters may be queried one or multiple at a time.

PMF are sent in common SMT TLIV format omitting the parameter value.

PMF Get Response frames contain these parameters: reason parameter; time stamp parameter; further parameters concerning the PMF Get request.

Para- Frame

meter Class PMF/RDF Response (Reason)

========== ======== =======================================================

0x00000001 RDF FrameClassNotSupported

The queried class is not supported.

0x00000002 RDF FrameVersionNotSupported

SMT version not supported.

0x00000003 PMF Success

Operation successfully completed.

0x00000004 PMF BadSetCount

Multiple stations try to access the same parameter.

This results in retransmission of the PMF Set Request

frame.

0x00000005 PMF IllegalOperation

Illegal PMF Set command.

0x00000006 PMF NoParameter

Unknown parameter type.

0x00000008 PMF/RDF OutOfRange

Parameter value exceeds the allowed range.

0x00000009 PMF NotAuthorized

Unauthorized PMF Request.

0x0000000A PMF/RDA LengthError

Length of queried parameter is invalid.

0x0000000B PMF FrameTooLong

PMF Response exceeds the maximum allowed

SMT frame length.

0x0000000D RAF SBADenied

Synchronous bandwidth allocation denied.

Type PMF Get Response

====== =====================================================================

0x0012 ReasonCode

Code of (un)successfull operation completion.

0x1033 TimeStamp

Current information's time stamp.

0x1035 SetCount

Optional PMF Set operation function.

0x1036 LastSetStationID

SMT station ID of the node that last changed the queried station's

MIB.

PMF Set

The PMF Set command is used to change parameter values of another FDDI node.

In order to avoid multiple MIB access by more than one PMF Set request frames the PMF Set function has to be preceeded by a PMF Get request frame. The queried station maintains a PMF Get request counter as well as a PMF Set request counter. A PMF Set command is valid only if both counter's values are equal.

PMF Set Response frames contain these parameters: reason code; time stamp; new set count; LastSetStationID; values of changed parameters. This functions as a positive or negative acknowledgment.
