RIP PCI (Xerox/Novell)
Routing Information Protocol (Xerox/Novell)
Move the mouse pointer to any protocol field and press the left mouse button.
NetWare RIP was also derived from Xerox protocols and my not be mixed up with Internet RIP. Both NetWare RIP and Internet RIP are similar, but different.
RIP is used for routing table exchange between NetWare routers. RIP packets contain routing table entries of the originating router.
The routing information provided by RIP enables RIP nodes to learn which IPX networks are reachable via various routers. RIP packets are sent every 60 seconds.
NetWare RIP is conveyed via IPX and is always addressed to IPX socket 0x0453. They are only sent in the current LAN; they are not forwarded by routers. Routers that receive RIP packets will 'learn' the routing information and generate new RIP packets themselves.
