Contents: used as hop count.

This field is used by NetWare routers which connect multiple NetWare LANs. The first four bits are not used; the last four bits are used as hop count.

The hop count indicates how many NetWare router the current IPX packet had been crossed. Each NetWare router increments the hop count by one. When being transmitted by its originator, the IPX packet has hop count of 0". All IPX packets are discarded by the 16th router.
