Length: 2 bytes

Contents: number of bytes in SMT information field.

The length of SMT data (SMT information) depends on the SMT type, and function. The maximum SMT informatin length is as follows:

MaxSMTinfo

= [max. frame length] - [FDDI header length] - [SMT header length] - [FDDI trailer length]

= 4500 - 16 - 20 - 6

= 4458 bytes

The minimum length is zero bytes. The maximum length of 4458 bytes is only used by the SMT echo frames (ECF). All other SMT frames are restricted to 4332 bytes.

SMT Info / length max.(1) = 4332 bytes - NIF,SIF,RAF,RDF,SRF,PMF,ESF

SMT Info / length max.(2) = 4458 bytes - ECF
