SMT - Station Management Protocol

The SMT protocol provides station management and ring maintenance by the FDDI adapters.

Each adapter's SMT function has a MIB holding FDDI ring management data.

FDDI management data are specified by ISO standard 1.0.9314.1, but it is also part of CMIP (1.0.9596.2) and SNMP (1.3.6.1.2.1.10.15) management platforms:

iso(1).standard(0).fddi(9314).mib(1).fddiSMTpkg(1)

iso(1).standard(0).fddi(9314).mib(1).fddiMACpkg(2)

iso(1).standard(0).fddi(9314).mib(1).fddiPATHpkg(3)

iso(1).standard(0).fddi(9314).mib(1).fddiPORTpkg(4)

iso(1).standard(0).fddi(9314).mib(1).fddiSMT(16)

iso(1).standard(0).fddi(9314).mib(1).fddiMAC(32)

iso(1).standard(0).fddi(9314).mib(1).fddiPATH(50)

iso(1).standard(0).fddi(9314).mib(1).fddiPORT(64)

iso(1).standard(0).ips-osi-mips(9596).cmip(2)

iso(1).org(3).dod(6).internet(1).mgmt(2).mib(1).transmission(10).fddi(15)

SMT frames are tolerant concerning ring delays. SMT responses may take up to 30 seconds (and even more) in order to protect real-time applications: FDDI adapters do not reply to SMT request frames at a higher priority. SMT response frames are related to the corresponding SMT reply frames by Transaction ID (4 bytes) (FDDI).
